NZ police call off search for Malaysian tourist
WELLINGTON: Police have called off the search for a Malaysian tourist who has been missing for two days in a snow-covered area of the country’s Southern Alps after he failed to return from a hike.
Kok Wong, 32, was last seen at a youth hostel in Aoraki Mount Cook Village on South Island on Wednesday afternoon, said senior constable Brent Swanson.
A team of 26 searchers and a dog handler searched in vain for Wong yesterday, after a helicopter swept the area on Thursday.
Swanson said Wong may have run into trouble and “perished quite early” from hypothermia.
“When people do that, they tend to climb into a hole in a log or a rock and then pass away, making it very difficult to find them,” he said.
The search would be reactivated if further information came to light, Swanson said, adding that Wong’s family had been told of the decision. - AFP
