PETALING JAYA: The CIMB-The Star Padang Relief Fund has been set up to help those affected by the devastating Padang earthquake.

CIMB Group has donated RM100,000 to kick-start the fund which was set up in collaboration with The Star.

Its chief executive officer Datuk Seri Nazir Razak said collection boxes will be placed at the group’s 1,150 branches in Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand for the public to chip in.

A collection box will also be placed at Menara Star here from Monday.

Nazir said the public should do their bit to help the victims and even RM1 would go a long way.

The CIMB Foundation, he said, would also match donations from the public “ringgit for ringgit” up to RM1mil.

“The target may be increased if the RM1mil mark is reached,” he said at the launch of the fund at Menara Star here yesterday.

Nazir said he was moved by the devastation the earthquake caused.

“We sympathise with the people in Padang who have lost their homes and loved ones. The quake has brought a lot of suffering.

“Two of our branches in Padang were badly affected by the earthquake but thankfully, all 26 staff members have been accounted for,” he said.

Nazir said he would ensure the donations would be deployed in the most effective way to help the victims either by using the money to buy immediate emergency supplies or for construction work.

“We urge the public here and in other South-East Asian countries to help,” he said.

Nazir said he would be working closely with his colleagues in CIMB Niaga and the Indonesian government to ensure the donations were used effectively.

Star Publications (M) Bhd executive deputy chairman Datuk Clement Hii said the company would go all out to create awareness about the fund so that as much money as possible could be raised.

CIMB, he added, was a great partner to work with as they were well known for their corporate social responsibility.

Besides cash collection boxes, customers and the public could also make donations via cheque or online banking to two collection accounts,
