Two killed after row of shops collapses
IPOH: Two persons were killed and another badly injured when a row of dilapidated shophouses collapsed on passing vehicles at Jalan Kamaruddin Isa in Fair Park here.
The vacant shophouses came tumbling down at about 9.30pm last night, burying a white Perodua Viva with the three persons inside. The rubble also hit three other cars.
The deceased, were identified as Zairi Mohd Sabri, 25, and Firdaus Mohd Norzila, 23. The injured, Abdil Kudus Ismail, 21, was sent to the Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital.
Perak CPO Deputy Comm Datuk Zulkifli Abdullah said search and rescue workers extricated the two bodies from the car.
It is learnt that the three men were good friends from Taman Perwira here and they were on the way to the city area for supper prior to the tragedy.
The shophouses had been earmarked to be demolished and the demolition work started yesterday morning.
Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, who was at the scene, said the shophouse owners had agreed to demolish the buildings to make way for a development.
