Prisons Dept awaiting order to cane Kartika
By MARTIN CARVALHO
MALACCA: The Prison Department is awaiting the order from the Pahang Syariah High Court to carry out the caning sentence againsty part-time model Kartika Sari Dewi Shukarno, who was found guilty of drinking beer.
Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman said the department is ready to mete out the punishment but could only do so upon orders from the Syariah High Court.
“The Prison Department cannot carry out the punishment without the order from the Syariah Court.
“The court order must be obtained first or the department can be held liable for acting without authority,” he told reporters after witnessing the opening of the Henry Gurney School’s new block and hostel here on Friday.
He denied that the delay in Kartika’s caning was due to “pressure” against the Government to stop the punishment from being imposed following wide coverage of her case by the media.
He was asked to comment on when Kartika would undergo the caning sentence imposed by the Pahang Syariah Court after she admitted to drinking beer on July 20 this year.
Kartika, 32, was sentenced to be caned six times and fined RM5,000 by the court after she was caught for the offence in the nightclub in Cherating on July 11, last year.
Her case attracted international media coverage including initial moves by the Sisters In Islam (SIS) to stay the sentence by filing a review against the sentence with the Pahang Syariah High Court on Sept 19.
However, the decision to cane Kartika was upheld by the Kuantan Syariah High Court Appeals Panel following a review on Sept 28.
Kartika, who works as a hospital administrator in Singapore, had earlier stated that she is willing to undergo the punishment.
