Innovation the wave of the future, says PM

KUALA LUMPUR: A National Innovation Centre and a chain of innovation centres of excellence will be set up to boost such activities in the country, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

He said these centres would ensure that innovation activities would be better coordinated and provide the push for new products to be commercialised.

He said this was the decision of the National Innovation Council which met at Putra World Trade Centre here yesterday.

Najib said the meeting also agreed that nanotechnology should be made a new source of growth in the country’s new economic model.

“Nanotechnology is an advanced field. It is very important that Malaysia does not lag behind in this area.

“We have made the decision that nanotechnology should be given emphasis,” he said.

Najib said that beginning next year, Quality Day would be replaced with Innovation Day.

This would lead towards increased innovation and efficiency in ministries and government agencies, he said.

Najib said there was also a proposal to set up an iconic innovation centre similar to the Multimedia Super Corridor.

However, he said the proposal would have to be studied by the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry to determine its suitability and viability.

Earlier, Najib witnessed the signing of the MoU between Might Technology Sdn Bhd, Proton Holdings Bhd and Azanor Exim Sdn Bhd for a vehicle advance telematics system.
