Opposition fuming over police denial
IPOH: The Opposition in Perak are angry at the police for denying that they had roughed up Pakatan Rakyat assemblymen during the tumultuous Wednesday state assembly sitting.
Former speaker V. Sivakumar said pictures in the major newspapers yesterday, showing him being manhandled by police, were proof enough.
Sivakumar claimed that there was an effort by the police to stop Pakatan representatives at the State Secretariat building car park.
Sivakumar also questioned the rationale behind the police barring Pakatan assemblymen from bringing their laptops and cameras into the state assembly.
Sivakumar, who lodged a report on the matter on Wednesday, also claimed that his speaker’s robe was torn when police removed it from him.
He also took a swipe at Speaker Datuk R. Ganesan for having 22 sergeant-at-arms to protect him in the assembly.
In Parliament Lim Kit Siang (DAP - Ipoh Timur), during the debate on Budget 2010, said police had no authority to meddle in legislative matters and that they have committed an illegal act when they seized Sivakumar’s robe and songkok.
