KAMPAR: Three people were killed and nine others injured, three of them seriously, in a road accident involving two cars and a van at KM40.2 of Jalan Ipoh-Teluk Intan near Mambang Di Awan here Friday night. Kampar police chief Supt Abdul Aziz Salleh said the dead were Halimah Hashim, 30, a passenger in the van, Cheong Ah Chong, 49, the driver of one of the cars, and Mah Ah Kam, 42, a passenger in the car driven by Cheong.
The three people seriously injured in the accident, which occurred at 8.50pm, were Halimah’s husband, Norazmi Baharuddin, 36, who was driving the van, and Cheong Kian Onn, 35, and Wong Weng Lam, 32, both passengers in Cheong’s car, he said.
Abdul Aziz said initial police investigation indicated that Cheong, who was driving from Langkap to Ipoh, lost control of the vehicle and it veered onto the right and hit the van travelling from Ipoh to Kampar. Another car hit the back of the van but the driver was unhurt.
He said Kampar Fire and Rescue personnel removed the bodies from the vehicles and sent them to the Kampar Hospital. The injured were also rushed to the hospital.
Cheong and his three passengers were from Taman Pelangi, Langkap, while Norazmi, a General Operations Force personnel, and Halimah were from Ulu Kinta, Ipoh, he said.
He also said that Norazmi’s van carried six other people, four of his children and two relatives, who were slightly injured and given treatment at the Kampar Hospital. -- Bernama
