Bridge collapse report ready in 2 weeks: Education DG
BY CHAN LI LEEN
IPOH: A report on the Education Ministry's probe into the Kuala Dipang bridge collapse incident that killed three pupils will be ready in two weeks, director-general Tan Sri Alimuddin Dom said.
Alimuddin, who headed a seven-man panel that commenced its investigation Saturday, said the report would be submitted to Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin after that.
"It is up to the minister whether or not to announce the findings of the investigation," he told reporters when met at the state education department here Saturday.
On Monday night, 22 pupils attending a 1Malaysia camp in Kuala Dipang, Kampar, fell into the Kampar River after the suspension bridge they were crossing collapsed.
The tragedy took three lives - N. Dina Deve and M. Devatharshini, both 11, and 12-year-old V. Divyashree.
"The focus of our investigation is on what actually happened and also on what can be learned from this.
"We do not want a repeat of this incident," he said, adding that the Public Works Department was assisting the panel in the technical aspects of the investigation.
Alimuddin said the ministry's sports and co-curriculum department director and his officers, Perak education director, Kampar district education officer, teachers, parents and pupils would be interviewed as part of the probe.
The contractor of the bridge and donor who contributed to the structure would be also called, he said.
"As of midday, we have interviewed five of them.
"If need be, we will continue until midnight to finish the interviews so that we can come up with our report soon," he said.
Alimuddin, however, said that the contractor would only be interviewed earliest on Monday.
"Due to certain reasons, the contractor is unable to meet us here but he has promised to talk to us in Kuala Lumpur," he said.
He declined to name the contractor and donor, saying that the investigation was confidential.
