Star Foundation contributes to Sarawak charitable groups

KUCHING: The Star Foundation has for the first time since its inception made contributions to charitable organisations in Sarawak.

Yesterday, the foundation donated a total of RM150,000 to Yayasan LaSallian Kuching, the Kuching Autistic Association, Sarawak Chil-dren’s Cancer Society and the Sarawak Single Mothers’ Association.

Star Publications (Malaysia) Berhad executive deputy chairman Datuk Clement Hii presented cheques of RM50,000 to Yayasan LaSallian Kuching and the association for the autistic, and RM25,000 to the cancer society and single mothers’ association.

Hii said the donations were part of the media group’s corporate social responsibility.

“We will also organise community projects and awareness campaigns to ensure better and healthier living and neighbourliness,” he said, adding that the foundation would be making contributions to organisations based in Sibu.

Kuching Autistic Association president Dr Yao Sik Chi said the donation would mainly go towards the association’s building fund for a new centre at Jalan Desa Wira here.

“It will comprise an education centre, a vocational training school and hostels for girls and boys.

“The project is estimated to cost RM5mil but we have collected only RM1mil to date,” he said, adding that the centre could be completed within two years once the funds were available. The association looks after 43 children aged four to 18.

Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society president Raymond Thong said the contribution would go towards the society’s running costs and sinking fund for a new RM2mil building to accommodate the patients and their families.

“This is a bonus for us as we have received a huge amount from the Star Foundation,” he said.

He said the society spent about RM300,000 a year to provide transport, lodging and food for outstation families whose children were undergoing cancer treatment at the Sarawak General Hospital here.

“We also help to buy medical consumables for the children when necessary,” he said.

Sarawak Single Mothers’ Association president Salmah Ibrahim said the donation would be used to run the association’s activities.

“We are organising a course on agriculture techniques on Nov 14-16 for our members, so part of the money will go towards that,” she said.

The association has about 7,000 members.
