Be with Barisan and prosper, Indians urged
KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak acknowledged that the Indian community felt “somewhat marginalised” and has renewed his commitment to provide all Malaysians, regardless of race, with a bright future.
The Prime Minister said the future of the Indians should lie with the Barisan Nasional-led Government.
Warm welcome: MAICCI president Datuk K.K. Eswaran (left) and his wife Datin Vivienne Eswaran (right) posing with Najib and Rosmah. Vivienne presented a garland to the Prime Minister’s wife at the dinner in PWTC yesterday. “If it were to be dependent on somewhere else, then the fate of the Indian community would be left in the wilderness,” he said during the Unity in Diversity dinner organised by the Malaysian Associated Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MAICCI) at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) here last night.
Najib said that if the Indians stood by the Government, he would ensure the community progressed along with the others.
He also reiterated his pledge to be a Prime Minister for all and that he would protect the rakyat, ensure fair deal for everyone and harness the full potential of all Malaysians.
“It is crucial to develop the most important asset of our country - the Malaysian people,” he said.
Najib said he had asked the CIMB Group to restore the name of Menara CIMB in Jalan Tun Perak to Menara UAB (United Asian Bank) in recognition of the Indian community.
He also announced that RM2mil would be granted to the MAICCI to train Indian entrepreneurs so that they could acquire the necessary skills to succeed in business.
“If MAICCI does well, then there is a possibility that the allocation may be increased.”
Among the 5,000-odd guests who joined the Prime Minister at the dinner were his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and MIC president Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu.
Najib was given 108 garlands during the ceremony by various Indian community and business associations.
About 16 students from local universities were also given scholarships under the MAICCI 1Malaysia Scholarship Award.
