Lawyer killed in robbery

By RASHITHA A. HAMID

KUALA LUMPUR: A lawyer was strangled to death by three men in his house in Jalan Batai, Bukit Damansara here.

M. Thiruchelraegaran, 75, his wife and their Indonesian maid were asleep when the three men broke into their house at 4am yesterday.

One of the suspects tied up the wife and maid before locking them in a room while another dragged the lawyer to the hall upstairs.

They then ordered Thiruchelraegaran to hand over the keys to the cabinet containing jewellery. It is believed that they strangled him when he refused.

The suspects then ransacked the house and managed to find some jewellery before escaping through the bushes behind the house.

The victim’s wife and maid freed themselves and called the police.

City CID chief Senior Asst Comm II Datuk Ku Chin Wah said the lawyer’s body was found on the floor in the hall upstairs when police arrived.

Initial investigation revealed that the men gained entry into the house by forcing open the front door.

It is learnt that the victim was supposed to attend a court hearing yesterday on a bankruptcy case.

“We are investigating if the case had anything to do with his murder or whether it was a planned robbery,” SAC Ku said.

He added that the body was sent to University Malaya Medical Centre for a post-mortem.

Police have classified the case as murder-cum-robbery.

A neighbour said the family had been renting the house for nearly two years.
