MB denies rift with Isa

Reports by SARBAN SINGH, ZULKIFLI ABD RAHMAN, C.S. NATHAN

PORT DICKSON: Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan has refuted talk by the Opposition hinting at political undercurrents in the state that he did not want Tan Sri Mohd Isa Samad to be the Bagan Pinang by-election candidate.

The Negri Sembilan Mentri Besar clarified that he was the one who personally proposed Isa’s name for the candidacy.

Mohamad said: “The Opposition should know that I’m campaigning for Isa. In fact, I spoke to him at the hospital when we were getting ready to bring back the body of Azman (Mohammad Noor, the late assemblyman) for the funeral. I said ‘Tan Sri, get ready to contest’.”

He said Isa had been reluctant to contest.

Hard at work: Barisan Nasional campaign workers putting up a billboard in Port Dickson Sunday.

“He told me that there were other capable candidates instead of him. But I insisted that he must contest and told him to make a personal sacrifice for the sake of Barisan Nasional.

“Only then did Isa agree,” he told reporters after a dialogue with village development and security committee members and administrators of local mosques, temples and churches here yesterday.

The Bagan Pinang seat fell vacant following the death of Barisan’s Azman on Sept 4. He won the seat in the 2008 general election with a 2,333-vote majority against PAS’ Ramli Ismail.

Mohamad said he was confident of Isa’s victory in the by-election.

He likened Isa to the closest relative who could help a houseowner hosting a village kenduri.

“You have to seek help from the closest people to you, not someone who stays far away. Otherwise, the kenduri will be a failure,” he added.

In his speech, Mohamad also urged village development and security committee chiefs and heads of various religious organisations in Port Dickson to become the eyes and ears of the state government, adding that they best know the issues and problems faced by the people.

“You are alert to the people’s complaints and wishes. I hope that you will give your feedback to us about what needs to be done to improve public amenities in your areas,” he said, adding: “You are the best officials who can present the Barisan vision to the people.”

Mohamad also announced the formation of a committee to receive direct applications for development projects, which he would head.
