Subra to improve estate workers’ welfare

PUTRAJAYA: Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam has held discussions with plantation owner Sime Darby to resolve the welfare issues affecting the estate work force in Bagan Pinang.

He is expected to announce the outcome of his meeting with Sime Darby officials on Thursday in Bagan Pinang.

During visits to several estates owned by Sime Darby in Bagan Pinang in the past week, Dr Subramaniam gathered feedback from the estate workers about their problems.

“The meeting with Sime Darby was to find solutions to the problems,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Dr Subramaniam also said he was shocked over allegations that some estate workers in Bagan Pinang were underpaid with some supposedly getting only RM300 a month.

“I welcome anybody with information on this to report to me or the Labour Department,” he said, adding that his ministry would take action against the estate management if there was sufficient evidence.

Dr Subramaniam also said his ministry would be organising a training and job placement programme for Bagan Pinang youths tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said Barisan Nasional’s strategy for the Bagan Pinang by-election was to sell the good qualities of its “product” rather than rundown its competitor just to score points with voters.

“Running down others has never been our way when competing in an election. We have good points to sell and we will use that to attract voters.”

Speaking to reporters at his ministry’s Hari Raya open house here yesterday, Ismail Sabri expressed confidence that Barisan would “win big.”

Bagan Pinang, he said, was Isa’s homeground.

“He is from there and his late wife (Puan Sri Hazizah Tumin) was also a local girl. Everyone loves him there and we have a good feeling that we can win the seat with a bigger majority,” he said.
