Wife slashed with parang for asking for divorce

KUANTAN: A woman was seriously injured when her husband slashed her with a parang at Lorong Seri Kuantan 65, here, after she asked him for a divorce.

They have been married for three years and have an 18-month-old daughter.

Pahang CID officer ASP Noor Asyikin Shamsuri said Tuesday that the victim, a 24-year-old clerk, was believed to have been arguing heatedly with her 33-year-old husband in front of her office at 8.20am Monday over her request for a divorce.

She said the woman's elder brother, who happened to be passing the area at the time, saw the arguing couple and stopped to tell the husband to stop harassing her and stay away from her.

He then called the police.

"The man, instead, grabbed his wife and forced her to get into a car and they struggled," she told reporters Tuesday.

The man then took out a "parang panjang" (long machete) from the car and began slashing at her back.

"She ran towards her brother, but her husband was berserk and continued to attack her and her brother. He then fled,” she said.

Badly slashed on the back and waist, the bleeding woman was rushed to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital for treatment while her brother, 33, received several stitches near his left eyebrow.

Noor Asyikin said the woman had lodged a police report on Sept 30 after her husband threatened to kill her for asking for divorce.

Police are now looking for the man who has six previous criminal records, including robbery and using threats. - Bernama
