Self-employed man gets 14 years’ jail for armed robbery and assault
KUALA LUMPUR: A self-employed man was sentenced to a total of 14 years in prison after he was convicted on two counts of armed gang robbery in which two of his victims were slashed.
Sessions judge Zainal Abidin Kamaruddin, who sentenced Muhamad Zamri Mezalan, 26, however, ordered the eight-year and six-year jail terms for the two charges to run concurrently from the date of his arrest on Sept 16 this year.
Zainal Abidin also sentenced him to four and three strokes of the rotan for the two offences, which are to be carried out consecutively.
Earlier, Muhamad Zamri, who helps his family run a restaurant, had pleaded guilty to the two charges.
In the first case, he was charged with robbing Syarikat DSA Interior Sdn Bhd of RM110,000, and hurting its directors Kwan Hee Wee, 39, and Chan Siew Meng, 43, with a parang and metal rods.
The offence took place at the company’s premises at Batu 3½, off Jalan Cheras, at about 12.45pm on July 13. His five accomplices are still at large. In the incident, Kwan was slashed on the right arm while Chan sustained injuries to the face and head.
In the second case, Muhamad Zamri was charged with robbing housewife Yvonne June Ovinis, 39, of her jewellery, RM900, a Tag Heuer watch, a gold necklace, a bracelet, a wedding ring and earrings.
He was armed with a parang when he robbed her at Klinik United at Jln Sepadu, Brickfields, at 8.30pm on July 24 with two others who are still at large.
No one was hurt in the incident.
Muhamad Zamri, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency, saying he would never commit such a crime again.
DPP Lee Keng Fatt, however, told the court that Muhamad Zamri was a habitual offender: he had a previous conviction for breaking into a house in Johor and had been sentenced to one year in jail in 2004.
