Arrest warrant out for director over unlicensed McDonald’s outlet

GEORGE TOWN: A warrant of arrest has been issued by a Magistrates court here against the director of a fast-food chain for not turning up to answer a summons for operating an outlet without a food establishment licence.
Golden Arches Restaurant Sdn Bhd was summoned to court Wednesday for operating the popular McDonald’s outlet at Desa Universiti in Jalan Sungai Dua, Gelugor, without a licence from the Penang Municipal Council’s licensing office.
The offence was recorded at 12.15pm on June 13, 2006.
As the company representative failed to turn up in court on Wednesday, the council’s prosecuting officer A. Mathana requested a warrant of arrest.
Magistrate Muhammad Fuirdaus Abdul Wahab issued the warrant against the company’s director, and fixed Nov 9 for mention.
The offence is under Provision 3(1) of the council’s Food Establishment By-Law 1991, which carries a penalty under Provision 39 of a fine of up to RM2,000 or a jail term of up to a year, or both.
It is learnt that the outlet has eight outstanding compound notices from the council’s licensing department from 1997 to 2008 for the same offence.
Last Friday, a similar summons was brought against the outlet and the same court also issued a warrant of arrest against the company director. That case will be mentioned again on Nov 4.
