Houses for all, promises Muhyiddin

PORT DICKSON: The Government will continue to build homes costing RM35,000 each to ensure every Malaysian can own a house.
Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said this was the Government’s commitment reflected through the setting up of Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB).
“A house is a man’s most valued property. We will help you realise this dream and I would like to stress here that we do not make empty promises,” he told residents at a meet-the-people session at Siliau Estate here yesterday.
Muhyiddin said SPNB has built 17,967 houses costing some RM1.1bil nationwide. Of these, 1,782 units were built in Negri Sembilan alone costing about RM1.1mil.

With him are Barisan candidate Tan Sri Mohd Isa Samad and MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong (seated, third from right). “We are not like the Opposition who are like an empty vessel. I want to ask the Kelantan Government where PAS has been in control for the past 20 years what they have done for their people,” he said, adding that he had challenged Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Nik Aziz Nik Mat while campaigning for the Manek Urai by-election to reveal their achievements but had yet to receive a response.
Muhyiddin said the Government, under the stewardship of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak was working hard so the people could lead quality lives.
Citing an example, he said Najib has set a target that hardcore poverty should be a thing of the past by the end of next year.
Muhyiddin said Najib has also directed his ministry to identify 100 elite-performance schools to allow children from various races to mingle and study together.
His ministry, he said, has also been directed to set up over 300 pre-schools to ensure that about 90% children would have access to pre-school education by 2013.
Muhyiddin said the Government was aware of the low wages being paid to estate workers, most of whom were Indians, and had addressed the situation by setting up a committee chaired by Najib to look into the community’s problems.
Later, Muhyiddin performed a ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of 150 houses by SPNB at the estate. The three-bedroom two-bathroom houses would be sold to former estate workers here for RM35,000 each.
He also said the Opposition’s threat to file an injunction to stop the Bagan Pinang by-election was just to buy more time to campaign.
The Opposition, he said, wanted to do so as they did not have the support of the people.
“They are under pressure and they know it,” he said when commenting on PAS’ plan to file the injunction claiming there were dual registrations in the Bagan Pinang electoral roll.
PAS also claimed that some of those registered as postal voters were also registered in other constituencies as normal voters.
