Study on five-fuel policy almost ready
KUALA LUMPUR: The study on a review of the five-fuel policy, first mooted in the 1980s, is nearing its final stages.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry and Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) were fine-tuning their paper for presentation to the Government.
The five-fuel policy, comprising oil, gas, coal, hydro-power and renewable energy like solar power and biomass, was to avoid over-dependence on any one source.
“We are currently reviewing the country’s fuel mix,” said Najib.
“It can’t change in a short period of time but can change in the medium- and long-term period.”
Najib said the country was heavily dependent on natural gas and coal for energy.
Their limited amount, he added, was a reason why an energy source of such high value should not be used to generate electricity.
“We need to look elsewhere,” he told reporters after attending TNB’s 60th anniversary celebration at the TNB Sports Complex in Bangsar here yesterday.
Najib said the option of nuclear energy was also included in the study.
“If we were to introduce nuclear energy, careful and meticulous planning must be conducted beforehand.”
However, he said the nuclear option would take 12 to 15 years to implement.
