Gerakan moves to lift morale
KUALA LUMPUR: Motivating the party at grassroots level after Gerakan’s devastating losses in the last general election will be one of the themes in president Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon’s speech today at its annual general meeting.
Dr Koh, who is also Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department in charge of Key Performance Index, will also touch on ways to improve morale by way of political training and partnerships with non-governmental groups.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is expected to open the party’s assembly, which will be attended by 1,800 delegates and 1,054 and 961 representatives from the Youth and Wanita wings respectively.
Among the proposals to be tabled are the lifting of an 18-branch cap on certain divisions.
Yesterday, Gerakan Youth proposed a three-term limit for the post of party president, state and division chairmen.
The suggestion was part of the wing’s nine resolutions, which were approved unanimously at its delegates’ conference.
Members also agreed to resolutions calling for all Gerakan branches and divisions to elect a youth representative below 32 years old as a committee member as a way of encouraging young leaders.
One resolution – for Gerakan to leave Barisan – was rejected.
In his address at the conference, Youth chief Lim Si Pin also suggested that branch chairmen submit photographic evidence of their members.
“At present, many of the branches only have paper meetings. They should submit photographs of all members. This is also to reduce the problem of ‘recycled’ members, who may be members in various branches,” he said.
It was also decided that Gerakan’s life members – appointed by the central committee – will meet more frequently to spearhead the revival.
Dr Koh said the council of life members would usually meet once every two or three years.
“But now, we will have meetings every year. Our party advisor Tun Dr Lim Keng Yaik has also indicated his interest in participating in the council’s workshop,” he said.
