Asian yacht race teams hold practice sessions

By R.S.N MURALI

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Asian Match Racing Championships 2009 kicks off with a practise session at the Pulau Duyong yacht match racing circuit.

One of the two Malaysian teams participating is Terengganu’s Team Taring Pelangi. The state is the host of the championship and the Monsoon Cup.

Skipper Hazwan Hazim Dermawan said the team practised yesterday morning in “perfect” winds that was about five knots.

The wind benefited them as they were disadvantaged in terms of bodyweight compared to the other teams.

He added they would like to improve on the teamwork for the race tomorrow.

The other Malaysian team was Team Malaysian Armed Forces 1. It’s skipper Mohd Razali Mansor said he would have preferred faster wind of about eight knots.

He was realistic about his team’s ability, saying they needed to improve on skills and techniques.

Like Team Taring Pelangi, they were hoping for a spot in the semi-finals.

Team New Zealand WAKA Racing, with its skipper Phil Robertson, said the Australians were the ones he would like to defeat from the eight teams participating in the event.

Robertson was confident of getting top placing in the regatta, rating his chances as an eight on a scale of 10.

For Team J.F.P, skipper Kan Yamada said it had been a good practise run with strong currents but he would have preferred stronger winds of about 10 knots.

“I competed in the AMRC last year but with a different set of crew. That time, I was not the skipper but the jib trimmer.

“This year will be a very different experience for me,” said the Japanese skipper.

He was also confident of making it to the final. The championship takes place from Nov 9 to Nov 12. The winner qualify for an entry into the Monsoon Cup.
