Flood situation worsens; Veggie and fish prices soar

THE situation in flood-hit Kelantan and the northern states is worsening — more people have been evacuated from their homes.

>        In Kedah, a total of 1,924 people were still being sheltered at 18 evacuation centres as of 5pm yesterday.

>        In neighbouring Perlis, floodwaters continued to rise in several low-lying areas in and around Kangar, forcing 247 people to be evacuated to three relief centres overnight. Several padi fields were also flooded.

>        A total of 3,910 people are still being housed in evacuation centres in Kelantan compared to the 2,558 the day before. Also, 18 schools in the state were closed.

Veggie and fish prices soar

THE prices of vegetables and fish have soared, with wholesalers and dealers blaming the current rainy spell for the increase.

> In Kuala Lumpur, vegetable prices have risen by up to 100% over the past week.

> In Kuala Terengganu, fish and vegetable prices have gone up by 35% to 100%.

> The Cameron Highlands Vegetable Growers Association said prices were determined by wholesalers and supply-and-demand, and that it was unfair to blame the increase on growers.

> A state official in Terengganu said traders were using the weather as an excuse to raise prices indiscriminately, and that the state Domestic Trade and Consumerism enforcement unit would be alerted.
