Aid to be given to farmers affected by rising waters
JITRA: A survey is being conducted to assess the damage caused by floods to agriculture in Kedah and Perlis.
Agriculture and Agro-based In- dustries Minister Datuk Mohd Johari Baharum said the Muda Agriculture Development Authority and Farmers Organisation Boards in Kedah and Perlis would conduct the survey and a report would be ready by next week.
“Aid will be given to the affected farmers. They need to inform their nearest farmers’ organisation if their land has been hit by floods,” he said after presenting food aid to some 200 flood victims at Kampung Kota Giam in Malau here yesterday.
Johari said most padi farmers had only recently started planting for the new season, with the seedlings mostly about 50 days old.
Meanwhile, a state flood operations centre spokesman said the water levels at the Pantai Johor River and Kepala Batas River were still above the danger mark.
In Kangar, it was reported that about 800ha of padi fields in several areas in Perlis are have been flooded for a week, causing about 1,200 farmers to suffer losses of around RM1mil.
State Agriculture and Agro-based Industries Committee chairman Sabry Ahmad said the state government would request an allocation from the Federal Government to help the farmers involved.
