ISA detention amendments sent to Cabinet

MUAR: The Law Reform Committee set up to review detentions under the Internal Security Act (ISA) has submitted its amendment proposals to the Cabinet.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong said Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz has also notified Parliament on the formation of the committee on Monday.
Speaking to reporters here, he said Parliament was expected to conclude its review of the amendments during its current sitting which ends next month.
“As chairman of the committee I can say here that we have submitted the review to the Cabinet and it is up to the Cabinet to approve it.
“We looked at every aspect of the law and hopefully the current Parliament sitting will discuss the matter,” he said during a visit on Thursday to the new Muar court complex under construction here.
Liew said besides the ISA detention, the amendments also looked at shortening the duration of detention or remand, and streamlining the procedural aspects of remand and arrest.
He said Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein was expected to make the announcement on the matter after the current Parliament sitting.
