Selangor releases ‘secret’ documents to the public

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor government has released its first set of “secret” documents — the controversial Green Revolution Plan and Bandar Alam Perdana: Lost Lands and Houses – to the public after declassifying them.

The information on the abandoned housing project will be in leaflets available at district offices in the state from Monday or on the state government portal from today.

Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim said yesterday that a list of the affected people – victims and developers – as well as the relevant Mentri Besar and district officers at that time would also be made public.

On Tuesday, when tabling the 2010 Budget at the State Legislature, Khalid announced that he had initiated the declassification of state information under Section 2C of the Official Secrets Act in keeping with his position as Mentri Besar.

At a press conference yesterday, Khalid said the documents provided details of how people who had been allocated 1.21ha plots of agricultural land had them taken over by developers for a housing project that was eventually abandoned.

Some land owners were promised RM360,000 to transfer their land to the developers but were left with no money and land in the end, he added.

He said the history went back to 1973 when the Barisan Nasional ran the state and involved more than 6,879ha of land.

Khalid said more than 700 agricultural land participants and 3,000 house buyers had been affected.

“It is important to reveal the information to the public. Sometimes, things that are not secret become secret,” he said.

Revealing the documents is the initial step by the Pakatan Rakyat government to resolve the abandoned project problem, he said, where the ultimate aim is for it to take over the project.

He said the victims could seek the state government’s assistance if they wanted to pursue their cases.

Khalid added that there were three sets of documents about different projects that would be revealed in stages.
