PAS commissioner defends Islamic enactment

SELANGOR PAS commissioner Datuk Dr Hasan Ali yesterday defended the provision in the Selangor Islamic Administration Enactment 2003 for Muslim preachers to get state permission first that was used by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department to arrest the ex-Mufti of Perlis Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin.

He said that Section 119 of the enactment was not defective and had been included to check those wanting to spread teachings of Islam that go against the authorised version in Selangor.

Dr Hasan, who is also the state Islamic Affairs, Malay Customs, Infrastructure and Public Amenities chairman, said the enactment stated clearly how a preacher should go about giving a sermon.

“It requires the officers to record the speaker’s background and to verify the teachings that he wants to convey to the people,” he said after the State Assembly sitting yesterday.

He said the provision was to protect the people and not meant to restrict speakers.

Dr Hasan added that those who were unsure of the laws practised in Selangor were the ones calling for the review.

“Each state has its laws regarding the Muslim faith and we must respect it,” he said.

Dr Hasan added that the investigation on Dr Asri was complete and he would be charged soon.

It is expected that Dr Asri would be charged under Section 119 of the Enactment tomorrow for preaching without the state permission at a private house in Taman Sri Ukay, Gombak to a crowd of 500 friends and relatives on Nov 1.
