Trio rescued from sinking ship
KOTA TINGGI: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency has rescued three crew members from a sinking vessel off the shores of Pengerang.
Its southern region chief Laksamana Pertama Che Hassan Jusoh said the Maritime Rescue Sub Centre received a distress call from the owner early yesterday.
“We received the call at about 3am from the owner saying that his vessel suffered a major leak and was taking in water off the coast of Batu Pahat,” he said.
Laksamana Pertama Che Hassan said a patrol boat arrived at the scene half an hour later.
“We rescued the three crew members, all locals aged between 19 and 28 years old,” he said, adding that initial investigations revealed that the vessel had about 1m of water.
“Swift action by our officers also saved the vessel from being totally submerged as they managed to control the leak,” he said.
Laksamana Pertama Che Hassan added that the cause of the leak was a faulty bucket shaft in the engine room.
The vessel, he said, was towed to a fishing jetty near Sungai Rengit with the aid of some local fishermen.
The vessel, registered as Jupiter One, set sail from Lumut to Tioman Island on Nov 8.
