Law to be amended to curb renting, leasing of licenses
IPOH: The Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) Act will be amended to raise the maximum compound rate to eradicate the renting or leasing of licenses, especially to foreigners.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz, said the step was being taken because the maximum compound rate of RM300 now was considered low by offenders.
"We are serious and will not compromise on the offence of leasing hired car or taxi licenses to foreigners...the owners of the license know that the license cannot be leased," he told reporters after presenting offer letters of approval of 272 new licenses for hire cars for Perak here Saturday.
He said the act of leasing licenses to foreigners caused quality to be eroded.
"The CVLB has revoked 17 licenses for various offences including leasing licenses," he stressed.
Meanwhile, the chairman of the CVLB, Datuk Halimah Mohd Sadique, said the proposal to amend was being drafted and would be discussed at ministerial level soon.
She said the CVLB had given various warnings and advice but some regarded the CVLB enforcement as light.
The action of revocation and suspension of license only after a person repeats his offence several times will also be tightened, she said.
Halimah said in September this year, 17 commercial vehicle licenses were revoked, 15 were suspended and 2,365 license holders compounded for various offences. - Bernama
