Raid at old folks' home found 175 illegals

KUALA LUMPUR: Old folks' homes are now being used as 'safehouses' by illegal foreign workers hoping to escape the long arm of the law.

A three-hour raid by authorities at an old folk's home in Tasik Permai, near Ampang and in surrounding areas in the wee hours of Sunday morning nabbed 175 illegals.

The illegals comprising 85 men, including a disabled, 60 children and 30 children - all of whom had no valid travel documents with them at the time of their detention.

They are from Indonesia, Myanmar and Bangladesh.

At the time of the raid, police found only eight senior citizens living at the home, while there were 18 illegals who were allegedly "tenants" at the premises.

Ampang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Jalil Hassan said police were investigating if the illegals were really tenants at the home due to having information that they had been staying there for five months.

He did not dismiss the possibility that the owner of the home could have been renting the premises out to illegals to make quick profits.

It is understood that the illegals were paying rent of between RM300 to RM400 each. - BERNAMA
