More people evacuated in Kedah, Perak (Update)
ALOR SETAR: The flood situation in Kedah worsened Sunday with the number of evacuees increasing to 1,062 people from 255 families.
A state flood operations room spokesman said 13 flood relief centres had been opened in three districts, comprising six centres each in Kota Setar and Kubang Pasu, and one in Padang Terap.
"The Kubang Pasu district recorded the highest number of flood evacuees, totalling 711 people from 158 families," he added.
He said the number of flood victims in the Kota Setar district was 314 from 89 families, while in Padang Terap, 37 people from eight families were still at a relief centre.
As at 11am Sunday, only Sungai Pantai Johor was still above the danger level at 2.3m (the danger level is 2m), he added.
Meanwhile, Bernama reported from Ipoh that a total of 450 people in Kerian had been evacuated to three relief centres in the district by 1pm Sunday.
Kerian district police chief Supt Mat Fauzi Nayan said the evacuees, from 116 families, were from Kampung Changkat Lobak, Kampung Selekoh, Kampung Beriah, Parit Simpang Empat, Parit Simpang Lima and Kampung Matang Tengah.
They were evacuated from 8am when water from the Bukit Merah dam overflowed, he said.
Fauzi said Jalan Alor Pongsu-Selama at KM13 to KM17 was still closed to all traffic.
Meanwhile, 72 flood victims from Larut Matang and Selama who were were evacuted last Wednesday were still at a relief centre in Kampung Kubu Gajah.- Bernama
