MCA to hold fresh CC election

KUALA LUMPUR: The MCA is committed to holding a fresh election for its central committee (CC) and the date of the poll will be considered six months from now.

Deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek said a committee would be established and this will be informed to the CC meeting on Wednesday.

The committee’s task include studying the new method of election and making suggestions on amendments to the party constitution.

Dr Chua said the party constitution must be amended before any changes to the election mechanism took effect.

Party members, he added, would be updated on the progress of the proposed fresh election.

The 60-year-old MCA holds triennial elections. The last election was in 2008 and there are 2,380 central delegates.

Dr Chua said the grassroots leaders from 155 out of the party’s 191 divisions who attended the greater unity plan briefing Sunday felt holding a fresh election was the best democratic way to move the party forward.

At a press conference after chairing the four-hour briefing at Wisma MCA here, Dr Chua, also the greater unity plan task force chairman, said the party had faced infighting for almost a year and it would take about six months to bring about stability.

MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and Dr Chua were not on good terms shortly after they were elected to their positions last October.

The two leaders announced their greater unity plan on Oct 22. It was endorsed by 29 of the 42-member strong CC on Nov 3.

The plan had received the blessings of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, also the Barisan Nasional chairman.

Describing the atmosphere at the briefing as “happy and reflective of the love for the party”, Dr Chua said the grassroots leaders also expressed readiness to work towards the next general election.

“The grassroots leaders especially must continue to conduct activities for the benefit of the people, offer their services and be sensitive to issues on the ground,” said Dr Chua.

He added it was also agreed that under-performing appointed office bearers at all levels must be replaced.

He added the coming CC meeting would also fine-tune the method of disbursing funds to the divisions nationwide for such purposes.
