KL proposes joint action to face disasters

SINGAPORE: Malaysia has called for a coordinated effort in the Asia-Pacific region to tackle emergencies and natural disasters, such as the devastating typhoons which struck Vietnam and the Philippines recently.

Deputy Foreign Minister Senator A. Kohilan Pillay said Apec could leverage the strengths of multi-sectoral participation, private sector partnerships and high-level political involvement to enable the region to be better prepared for future disasters.

“We feel that early warning systems and emergency preparedness to face extreme climate changes should become an important part of our human security concerns,” he said, adding that the effects of global climate change were becoming more evident with more occurances of natural disasters.

“The region is bound to witness many more disasters in the future and we will be prone to more violent storms aggravated by climate change,” he said at the Apec Ministerial Meeting here.

Kohilan stressed that mitigating the adverse impact of climate change through sustainable use of energy was equally important, saying there should be a push for a successful outcome to the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen next month.

“We hope the conference will achieve a successful outcome which includes serious efforts or measures to ensure the full implementation of the various elements of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyto Protocol as well as the Bali Plan of Action.
