Youth who turned his knife on cops shot dead

By G.C. TAN

ARAU: A youth walked into a police station brandishing a vegetable knife and declared that he was going to kill a friend.

Policemen, although taken aback, took no chances — two of them tailed Muhammad Taufik Noorzan on foot as he walked 2km to his village in Guar Sanji near here.

Upon reaching the village, the 21-year-old immediately started shouting that he would kill villagers and anyone that passed his way.

By then, more policemen had arrived and they spent the next 90 minutes trying to persuade the very agitated Muhammad Taufik to calm down and surrender his knife.

However, he became even more aggressive and caused a commotion when he started to chase villagers with the knife in his hand.

A policeman fired a shot into the air to try to stop Muhammad Taufik but he then turned his attention on the law enforcers.

One of the policemen then opened fire on the youth, hitting him in the chest.

“The youth was declared dead upon arrival at Hospital Tuanku Fauziah in Kangar.

“He was in a very dangerous and aggressive mood. Police had no choice but to shoot him to ensure public safety,” Perlis acting police chief Senior Asst Comm (I) Datuk Jamshah Mustapa told reporters at the contingent headquarters in Kangar.

According to SAC Jamshah, police learned that Muhammad Taufik had earlier run amok in his village at about 6am and attacked a friend with a piece of wood and a metal rod.

“His friend was seriously injured on the head, arms and body.

“But the youth was still dissatisfied and returned home to get a knife with the intention to kill the friend,” SAC Jamshah said.

He added that they did not know why Muhammad Taufik went berserk but police were looking at various angles, including drug abuse.

Sources told The Star that Muhammad Taufik had been upset with the friend for leaving him stranded in a karaoke outlet in Alor Star the night before.

He was forced to take a taxi home.
