Improved irrigation system needed
JITRA: The Muda Agriculture Development Authority (Mada) needs about RM2.2bil to improve its irrigation system in order to curb floods damaging crops in Kedah and Perlis each year.
Deputy Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry Minister Datuk Mohd Johari Baharom said a proposal would be submitted to the Economic Planning Unit under the Prime Minister’s Department next month.
“The irrigation system in the Mada area is more than 30 years old. We need a new system that would ensure the crops receive ample supply of water and at the same time, are protected during floods,” he said after visiting rice fields hit by floods in Kampung Budi in Teluk Malik, here yesterday.
He was accompanied by Mada general manager Datuk Abdul Rahim Salleh.
Abdul Rahim had on Nov 5 said that the Kedah Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) would construct two man-made rivers to control the floods, which would also include reservoirs that could store water during heavy rain.
On the recent floods that hit the area, Mohd Johari said Mada had identified the 4,500ha of land, including 866ha in Perlis, affected by the disaster and is now estimating its losses.
