Proposed new election system well received

KUALA LUMPUR: The MCA’s proposed new mechanism to enable grassroots members to elect top leaders was very well received as it would reflect better the party’s choices, said vice-president Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen.

She said the high attendance of more than 80% of division leaders at the MCA closed-door dialogue yesterday showed the members wanted the new system to be implemented.

“Everybody who attended the meeting, except for a handful of 10 people or so, said the new mechanism was more representative of grassroots wishes. It gives them more say in the election of national leaders,” she said.

“In order to prepare for the election, we must have the proper mechanism, amend the constitution and move forward from there,” Dr Ng told reporters when commenting on the reaction from grassroots leaders at Wisma MCA here yesterday.

MCA information and communication bureau chief Senator Heng Seai Kie said the high attendance at the briefing reflected the acceptance by grassroots leaders and central committee.

This showed that they had endorsed the unity plan, she added.

“The people calling for the EGM should stop and listen to what the grassroots want.”

Malacca Wanita MCA chief Datuk Kian Sit Har said all six divisions from the state attended the dialogue.

“We are supportive of the greater unity plan. When the president decided that he would work together with his deputy Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, all of us felt humbled,” she said.

Kian said that uniting both Ong and Chua’s factions was the best move because the results from the Oct 10 extraordinary general meeting had showed that the party was evidently split 50-50.

“Therefore, if both are united, then the party will be whole again,” she said.

Other representatives who came for the meeting also expressed their confidence in the unity plan.
