Pakatan to go all out to retain Selangor, says PKR adviser

SHAH ALAM: Pakatan Rakyat will go all out to retain its hold in Selangor, PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

“We will not only defend Selangor, but we will win big (in the next elections),” he said.

He vowed that he would not let Barisan Nasional seize control of the state as it was now Pakatan’s fort.

Anwar was speaking at the opening of the Selangor PKR convention at the State Secretariat building yesterday.

Later at a press conference, Anwar took a softer stand, saying that he preferred to co-operate rather than go on the offensive.

“We prefer to take a cordial approach in line with democratic practices,” he added.

However, Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim had tried in vain to hold meetings to have a cordial working relationship with the Federal Government, he said.

“There is a lot of pressure. There are efforts to set up an alternate government in the state,” said Anwar, adding that he was intervening in Selangor because the Mentri Besar was not at Najib’s “level”.

Asked about allegations that PKR vice-president Azmin Ali had bought shares worth millions of ringgit in the early 1990s, Anwar said it was a re-run of allegations that surfaced a decade ago.

“I believe Azmin will be taking legal action. We must distinguish between facts and slander,” he said.

Anwar also questioned why action was not taken against people linked to Barisan Nasional who were implicated in high-profile cases.

In his speech, Anwar also said he did not want to see remnants of MIC and Umno in PKR.

He warned that mischievous members would be kicked out of the party, adding that candidates for the next general election would be thoroughly screened to determine their eligibility.
