No freak winter storm in KL ... honest
PETALING JAYA: An e-mail rumour circulating for the last month or so saying that a freak winter storm will hit the nation’s capital on Friday has no basis in scientific fact.
“No such storm will take place,” the Malaysian Meteorological Department said in a statement issued Thursday.
“Since early November, e-mails have been widely circulated claiming and predicting that a winter storm will hit Kuala Lumpur on Nov 20.
“The Meteorological Department would like to clarify that the information in the e-mail is not true. Winter storms do not happen in the tropics where Malaysia is located. They only happen in the mid-latitude countries.
“Currently a monsoon wind surge has occurred over our country. This monsoon wind surge is entirely different from winter storms.
“For the next few days this will bring some heavy rain over the east coast states of Kelantan and Terengganu. Occasional heavy rain is also predicted for northern Perak, Kedah and Perlis,” it said, advising members of the public not to believe the rumour.
The e-mail, from an anonymous person, said that a freak winter storm is expected to hit the Kuala Lumpur city centre on Friday, Nov 20 at around 7pm, quoting unnamed “reliable sources.”
