KUCHING: The Federal Government has agreed to take over the newly completed Sarawak International Medical Centre (SIMC) in Samarahan near here.

Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam said the Health Ministry was now carrying out an evaluation exercise of SIMC buildings and facilities, and the kind of services to be provided.

“The occupation permit has been obtained for SIMC, and all the essential facilities are available for the start of operations.

“I will ensure that the Health Ministry will be able to operate the SIMC as a general hospital for the benefit of the people, within the shortest possible time,” he added.

The Sarawak General Hospital is the state capital’s sole public hospital. It also serves as a teaching hospital for Universiti Malaysia Sarawak medical students.

The RM400mil SIMC was meant to be a private tertiary medical centre, and was to involve itself in reseach activities.

Dr Chan said the state government had agreed to the state Health director’s request to use SIMC as an emergency hospital in the preparation of a possible second wave Influenza A(H1N1) endemic.
