Penang PKR members now upset with new committee

GEORGE TOWN: Newly-appointed state PKR chairman Mansor Othman’s committee came under fire from several quarters including former state information chief Tan Tee Beng over the new state liaison committee line-up.

Meanwhile. Pakatan Rakyat parties in other parts of the country are also embroiled in troubles with police reports lodged. .

The latest controversy here follows calls to replace former state party chairman Datuk Seri Zahrain Mohd Hashim a few months back.

Tan said he was confused by the appointment of certain individuals who he claimed had damaged the party’s image.

“I would like to meet Mansor for an explanation. Some of those ap-pointed were the very same people our members wanted removed along with Zahrain,” he said.

Tan, however, denied he was behind a press release condemning the line-up.

On Monday, a press release in Mandarin was issued to the vernacular newspapers complaining about the line-up.

The unsigned statement was allegedly made by party members from the Permatang Pauh, Penang Hill, Tanjong, Bayan Baru and Batu Maung divisions. The statement claimed that the new appointments were made based on “friendship” rather than merit.

Tan, who is also the Nibong Tebal MP, was replaced by Penang State Assembly deputy speaker Tan Hock Leong.

In Kuching, six Barisan Nasional assemblymen have lodged a police report against DAP’s Voon Lee Shan yesterday morning for allegedly making seditious remarks in the state assembly last week.

Asajaya assemblyman Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said Voon’s remarks, made during the debate on the Budget last Wednesday, could cause racial tension in Sara-wak’s multi-cultural society, particularly among the Malays and the Dayaks.

Voon was alleged to have said that the definition of “native” in the Federal constitution did not include the Ibans and Bidayuhs of Sarawak.

Meanwhile, in Kota Kinabalu, state Umno Youth chief Azman Roslan has lodged a police report against DAP’s sole assemblyman Jimmy Wong following allegations that he had obtained a native certificate fraudulently.
