Uproar over charging of ex-mufti
Reports by LEE YUK PENG, ZULKIFLI ABD RAHMAN and TEH ENG HOCK
THE Dewan Rakyat was in an uproar over the decision to charge former Perlis mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin with teaching aspects related to Islam without certification.
Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Dr Mashitah Ibrahim was replying to a question from Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on syariah courts when the latter asked about Dr Asri.
This prompted Dr Mashitah to say that “even when one could drive well on the road, the driver would still be caught if he did not have a driving licence.”
Anwar then stood up and said: “He has a licence to be a mufti, but not a licence to give a religious talk?” This caused the House to erupt in a noisy row between the Opposition and the backbenchers.
