Government mulls over tighter lottery control

THE Government has promised to look into reducing the number of draw days despite collecting a total of RM2.37bil in revenue from lottery and casino takings last year.

Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussein said the Government netted, among others, RM949.8mil from Genting, RM509.74mil from Sports Toto, RM396.5mil from Magnum, RM270.76mil from Pan Malaysian Pool and RM138mil from Pan Malaysia Racing.

Several Opposition MPs, including Loke Siew Fook (DAP — Rasah), had earlier urged the deputy minister to push for a reduction of the number of draws.

“In a year, there are 72 special draws, in addition to normal draws three times a week. The special draw started in 1998 when the Government used it to raise funds to help farmers affected by a disease outbreak. Now, there are simply too many special draws,” said Loke.

Dr Awang also said the Government collected RM4.4bil from “sin tax” imposed on cigarettes and liquor last year and expected another RM504mil on real property gains tax.

He said the Energy, Green Technology and Water Ministry was also looking for a solution to the Indah Water Konsortium issue. “Until now, IWK is still unable to be self-reliant.”
