Shophouse owners may be held accountable
IPOH: The owners of pre-war shophouses in Fair Park here could be held accountable for the collapse that killed two people and injured another last month.
Ipoh police chief Asst Comm Azisman Alias said the owners also would be held responsible if the subcontractors they had hired for the demolition job were negligent.
“The owners are accountable for the actions of their subcontractors,” he said.
ACP Azisman, however, declined to elaborate, saying that police would be wrapping up their investigations soon.
“We are compiling the reports of all the relevant authorities and will submit the investigation papers to the Deputy Public Prosecutor for further action,” he added.
On Oct 2, the row of shophouses, which were being demolished, collapsed on a Perodua Viva that was waiting at a traffic light junction on Jalan Kamaruddin Isa.
A committee set up to investigate the collapse was later reported to have found elements of negligence, according to state Local Council Committee chairman Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon.
“We will be making the report public soon,” he said after launching a road safety campaign organised by the Ipoh City Taxi Operators Association.
