Three plead guilty to causing detainee’s death
KUALA LUMPUR: Three men, who were initially remanded for drug offences, ended up pleading guilty to manslaughter at the Sessions Court for bashing up and causing the death of another detainee during custody.
Erick Sandi, 30; Muhamad Aman Abd Rahman, 39; and Mohd Rosdi Mohd Yusoff, 33, pleaded guilty yesterday to causing the death of Tan Eng Kiam, 49, at the Hang Tuah police station lock-up at about 12.15am on April 24, 2007.
According to the statement of facts, Erick, a contractor; Muhamad Aman, a lorry driver; and Mohd Rosdi, a restaurant assistant — all under remand for drug offences — had gone into Tan’s cell and started hitting and kicking him.
Tan was found lying unconscious by another detainee and was then sent to Hospital Kuala Lumpur, where doctors found a 6cm crack on his skull near his ear.
He died two months later on June 25 at the Kuala Kubu Baru Hospital.
Judge Zainal Abidin Kamaruddin fixed Dec 21 for conviction and sentencing.
