Selcat to haul up Pakatan reps

By CHRISTINA TAN

KLANG: Three Pakatan Rakyat assemblymen will be called to answer in a public inquiry to explain excessive expenditures of their annual allocations.

A number of witnesses, including five district officers, were expected to take the stand before the Special Select Committee on Competence, Accountability and Transparency (Selcat) between Dec 7 and 10.

Selcat chairman Teng Chang Khim said notices would be issued to the witnesses by Monday but declined to reveal the names of the assemblymen.

“We want to know why more than 70% of the annual allocation was spent in just five months.

“Was it due to emergencies or disasters or big events in their respective areas? We need to understand it,” Teng said.

He added that one of the assemblymen had spent 90% of the allocation on the fifth month and used up to 99% the following month.

Teng said the annual allocation received by Selangor’s elected representatives was one of the highest in the country.

Teng said the inquiry was to help the committee identify weaknesses and to assist in improving the distribution of funds.

He also said the committee was expected to interview the district officers on the first two days and the assemblymen on the third and fourth day of the inquiry.

It was reported in September that Selangor executive councillor Ronnie Liu was believed to be called by Selcat for finishing the entire allocation of RM600,000 for his Pandamaran constituency within seven months.

He also used up about RM800,000 of the RM1mil allocated for the Sungai Pelek and Sungai Panjang constituencies under his care.

Liu said he had used up all the allocation for Pandamaran because there were too many requests from various bodies.
