Coalition to continue helping Indians

AN alliance of Indian non-governmental organisations (NGOs) established last year will focus on helping the community develop, Tamil Nesan reported.

The Coalition Of Malaysian Indian NGOs (Comin) was initially formed on an ad-hoc basis in January last year to support the release of Hindraf activists detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA).

Its chairman, Datuk A. Vaithilingam, said the coalition was currently focusing on problems faced by the Indian community and providing ideas on how to improve their social, educational and economic standing.

He said Comin had 40 active NGOs under its fold and has drawn interest from more than 100 organisations.

He added that Comin would act as a think-tank to gather opinions from experts and give advice to NGOs and government authorities on obstacles facing Indians.

The report said a recent Comin seminar on how Indians could tap into allocations announced in Budget 2010 drew 108 participants.

> Malaysia Nanban reported that South Indian actor-turned-politician Vijaykanth would launch his own Tamil TV channel, Captain TV, to aid in his campaign during the Tamil Nadu state assembly elections scheduled to be held before 2011.

“Captain” is the name accorded to Vijaykanth after his lead role as an army captain in the hit movie Captain Prabakaran, released in the early 1980s.

His political party, Desiya Mutpokku Dravidar Kalagam (DMDK), has not been able to win any parliamentary or state assembly seats so far, apart from the Viruthasalam state seat held by the actor himself.
