Prime Minister comes up with plan to end crisis in MCA
By ROSLINA MOHAMAD
PEKAN: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has put forward a conflict-resolution proposal to MCA with high hopes of ending the leadership crisis.
Najib said hopes were high in finding a solution to the crisis but he did not elaborate on the details of the formula.
Sources said holding a fresh election for the MCA was one of the issues discussed when Najib held separate meetings with the two rival groups in the party yesterday.
“I have held discussions with the MCA leaders aimed at resolving the crisis, and to find a way to have all the opposing groups accept a formula that will bring back the credibility and confidence of party members as well as the Chinese community.
“I was made to understand that the leaders are considering the formula that I have put forward.
“I hope they will accept it,” Najib told reporters after handing over 427 head of cattle to 165 surau and 55 mosques here yesterday for the upcoming Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration.
The Barisan Nasional chairman has asked his deputy Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to continue follow-up discussions with MCA leaders since he would be flying off to Trinidad and Tobago to attend the Com- monwealth Heads of Govern- ment Meeting.
“The discussions are to be based on the formula that I have given to the MCA leaders,” he said.
On whether the formula included the greater unity plan unveiled by MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat, Najib said it would be discussed after they had agreed upon his formula.
“We shall wait in the next one or two days,” he said.
On whether there was a time-frame set for the MCA leaders to make their decisions, Najib replied: “We want this to be over and done with as soon as possible.”
