Anwar’s suit against Nalla is a ploy

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s suit against Malaysian Indian United Party president Datuk S. Nallakaruppan is just another ploy by the Opposition leader to avoid answering the latter’s political challenge against him, says Mohamad Ezam Mohd Nor.

The former PKR Youth head said Nallakaruppan had issued various challenges against Anwar, such as the latter’s “special relationship” with PKR vice-president Azmin Ali and that he was incapable of leading Pakatan Rakyat.

“Nallakaruppan’s statements were outright and Anwar should have answered them but he did not do that,” said Mohamad Ezam yesterday.

“Not to be seen as defeated, Anwar then files a legal suit against him and so the battle shifts from a political to legal one.

“By filing a legal suit, he is avoiding a face-off with Nallakaruppan,” Mohamad Ezam said.

He was commenting on Anwar’s RM50mil suit against Nallakaruppan over an article titled “Anwar terima RM60 juta” (Anwar received RM60mil), which was published in Mingguan Malaysia and Sinar Harian in August 2008.

Anwar claimed that Nallakaruppan had made a false allegation about him in the article.

Mohamad Ezam also pointed out that Anwar seemed to be delaying the trial by “giving excuses” and asking Nallakaruppan to produce certain documents before it had even started.

“This shows that he is not ready to face Nallakaruppan and it is a ploy to avoid fundamental issues which need to be addressed.

“If you are the one filing the suit and have the upper hand, why delay it then?” he asked, describing the delay as one of Anwar’s tactics.

Mohamad Ezam added that he believed Nallakaruppan had a “strong basis” to accuse Anwar because such an allegation was not a petty matter and that he had the courage to challenge the latter openly.

Anwar was also accused of practising double standards and criticising the judicial system.

Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said in Subang Jaya that Anwar had been blaming the courts for delaying cases which had led to a massive backlog.

“It is unbecoming of an Opposition Leader to raise and highlight such issues when he is determined to keep postponing the sodomy case he is facing.

“He should be gentleman enough to face the charge in court and in the name of justice,” he said.
