Stop blanket approval for outsourcing, says union
KUALA LUMPUR: The National Union of Bank Employees Sunday called on Bank Negara to stop blanket approval for outsourcing of services by banks.
"These approvals have completely disregarded the security of tenure and right to livelihood of local workers," its General Secretary J. Solomon said.
He told Bernama that under the concept, various functions of the banks were transferred to subsidiaries with separate legal entity, thus depressing wages and benefits of workers in the country.
For example, he said certain banks have outsourced their call centres to their subsidiaries and were either retrenching existing call centre staff or transferring them to the subsidiary with lower salary.
Solomon said once these staff were transferred or retrenched they could no longer remain as union members thus exposing themselves to exploitation by the new management.
He claimed that this was an indirect method of "union busting" and that the government should put a stop to it.
He called on the Ministry of Finance to call for an immediate tripartite meeting with banks and unions to iron out the problem. - Bernama
