Girl who tried to kill mum sent for mental checkup

KOTA KINABALU: Police have sent a 15-year-old girl, who allegedly tried to kill her mother last week in a plot said to have been hatched by her stepmother, for psychiatric evaluation.
Papar district police chief Deputy Supt Nek Zaidi Zakaria said that a psychiatric evaluation of the girl was needed to help ascertain why and how she was allegedly persuaded by her 25-year-old stepmother to kill her own mother.
According to him, the girl, a school dropout, was a victim of rape when she 13 and got married when she was 14. She is now divorced and living with her mother.
“We need to know her state of mind,” he said when contacted Sunday.
The girl, who had used a sarong laced with formic acid to smother her mother at about 11.30pm on Thursday, was detained together with her stepmother after police found text messages from the stepmother to girl purportedly prompting her to kill her mother.
Zaidi said the stepmother, who is under remand, had claimed to the police that the text messages were sent as a joke to the girl.
She had claimed that she did not intend to ask the girl to kill her mother.
“We believe it is jealousy but we are trying to pinpoint the source of it (jealousy),” he said, adding that investigation was still in progress as police needed to interview various other people connected to the family.
The stepmother is alleged to have given the formic acid to the girl on Nov 9 and then sent several text messages urging the girl to kill her mother.
The girl was living with her mother, a staff of the Lands and Survey Department here, while the stepmother lived with the girl’s father in Kota Belud.
The mother who managed to fend off the daughter’s attempt suffered slight acid burns to her face and was given outpatient treatment at the hospital.
