Cholera: 185 cases confirmed in Terengganu, 18 in Sabah


KOTA KINABALU: Terengganu has recorded 185 cholera cases and Sabah, 18.

Deputy Health Minister Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin, in confirming the figures Monday, said that so far these two states were the only ones reported with the cholera outbreak.

"The situation in Sabah is under control so there is no need to panic.

“As usual we advise the public to look after their health and hygiene, and to be careful when handling food," she told reporters after launching the Second International Conference on Rural Medicine 2009 here.

On Sunday, Minister in the Chief Minister's Department Datuk Nasir Tun Sakaran was reported to have said that 18 people were down with cholera in Semporna and were now recovering in the hospitals.

The Semporna fish market, which was believed to be the place where the outbreak started, was closed as a precautionary measure. Rosnah clarified that 17 cases were from Semporna and one case was from Pulau Gaya, near here.

She said Terengganu was experiencing a different situation from Sabah as the cholera strain there was different and did not respond to the common antibiotics used to treat cholera. "In Sabah, it's a normal strain. So far, the patients are responding to the antibiotics, she said. - Bernama
