Soi Lek: Party unity is a necessity

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek says unity is a necessity for the party.

And leaders have to admit that the internal strife over the past one year had paralysed the party, he said.

Dr Chua admitted that he was the cause of the Oct 10 extraordinary general meeting (EGM) because he was unhappy with certain party decisions.

However, he said much water had flowed under the bridge since.

As leaders and members of a political party, he said there should be a realisation that “we must work together”.

He said there was greater awareness by president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat on this, and that “we should bury the hatchet.”

On the greater unity plan, he said it was important that there should be sincerity to make it work.

“No point in (just giving) lip service if you are not sincere and (show) no mutual respect ... the respect that everyone has a role to play,” he told Bernama.

Dr Chua said there was no doubt that after the Oct 10 EGM, another splinter group had emerged.

“But as far as the greater unity plan is concerned, it will be have to be inclusive and this group of people should be included.”

He added that the MCA top leadership would tour the states to explain the greater unity concept.

In GEORGE TOWN, party vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai hoped the crisis in the party could be resolved by the end of the year by calling for fresh polls.

He said MCA must turn over a new leaf by next year to be able to help Barisan Nasional regain the support of the people.

Liow said all had agreed that there was a need for a fresh polls.

He added that the date of the polls could not be dragged too long to make sure the party was well prepared to face the general election.
